Borrowing Privileges & Library Cards

Getting a Library Card - WSU Affiliates

To borrow library materials from WSU Libraries (including materials held at reserve desks), each patron must have a WSU OneCard. WSU affiliates are defined as faculty, students, staff, and retirees. These individuals may receive their OneCards from the OneCard office on the lower level of the Student Center Building. Please report lost cards immediately to the OneCard office, or, for more information call 313-577-CARD.

Getting a Library Card - Guests

Library patrons who are not WSU affiliates may inquire at any circulation desk about guest borrowing privileges. A Wayne State University Libraries guest card is available to any non-WSU affiliated user upon presentation of appropriate identification and payment of appropriate fees. Persons applying for guest cards will be expected to show identification, such as university ID, WSU alumni card, and a photo ID with a current address. There are limited services available for guests. More details about guest fees and privileges.

How to Borrow Materials

Bring library materials to any WSU library checkout/Access desk and present your WSU OneCard or WSU Libraries guest card and a current photo ID.

* A fourth renewal must be done at a WSU library with the checked out item present.
** The renewal privilege corresponds with employee’s “patron category” at the time of retirement

The due date will be stamped in the back inside cover of a book. Reserve materials are generally restricted to a shorter loan period. The length of time may vary from item to item. Many Reserve items are for “building use only”.

Renewals

WSU affiliates may renew most WSU library material at any of the WSU libraries. WSU affiliates may renew items up to three times in the following ways:

Patrons may renew materials using the Library Catalog by clicking on "Renew Your Books/View Your Record," inputting the 14-digit number below the barcode on their OneCard, (it begins 29343…) and following the instructions provided on the Web page. Items may be renewed by calling a WSU library circulation desk and providing the 14-digit number under the barcode on the OneCard and the number of the barcode in the back of each item, or the title of each item you wish to renew.

The following restrictions apply to renewal of library materials:

  • Reserve materials must be renewed at the library from which they are borrowed.
  • A fourth renewal must be done in person with the materials in hand.
  • If an item has a "hold request" or has been "recalled" it cannot be renewed.
  • An overdue item may be renewed unless there is a bill for the item's replacement (see below). Such items must be returned in person. Once     the billing record is cleared, the item may be renewed.
  • Placing Hold Requests and Recalls on Materials

WSU affiliates may place "hold requests" or "recalls" on items that are checked out. When an item is returned, the first patron in the "hold" queue will be notified of its availability. Patrons may place hold requests for items that are currently checked out by clicking on the "request" button in the Library Catalog.

A recall notifies a borrower that the material he/she has checked out is needed. The borrower is asked to return the material 2 weeks from the date of the notification. Recalled materials cannot be renewed.

    Returning Library Materials

Any WSU library item may be returned at any of the Wayne libraries, with the exception of reserve and media materials. Reserve materials must be returned to the library from which they were borrowed. Videos, DVDs, or other media material borrowed from the UGL must be returned there. There are outside book return facilities at all libraries except the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Learning Resource Center and the Oakland Center.

    Overdue Library Materials

All library patrons, (including graduate students, staff, alumni and guest borrowers) are charged as follows:

Overdue notices are mailed to borrowers who have not renewed or returned an item. Overdue notices are a courtesy reminder. Patrons are responsible for fines and returning materials even when notices are not received. If an item is not returned or renewed, a bill for the replacement cost of the item is processed approximately 42 days after the due date. This bill will include a $20.00 maximum overdue fine. When the item is returned, the borrower will not be held accountable for the replacement cost, but will still be responsible for overdue fines.

Failure to return an item for which a borrower has been billed will result in the withdrawal of borrowing privileges. A continued lack of response may result in the library placing a “hold” on student records, and/or referring the borrower to a collection agency.

Borrowers may pay fines and and replacement fees in person at any WSU library circulation desk. All libraries accept exact cash or checks. In addition, the Purdy/Kresge Library, Shiffman Medical Library and the Adamany Undergraduate Library can accept Visa or Mastercard to pay fines.
Note: Fines, fees and replacement costs are subject to change without notice.

    View Your Record

Borrowers may view a list of the materials signed out, check due dates, verify address information, renew materials, check status of hold requests, and check to determine existing fines by using the WSU Library Catalog's link to "Renew Your Books/View Your Record." Enter the 14-digit number (29343…) below the barcode on their OneCard or library card.
