Instructions for Medical Campus Faculty, Students, and Staff
Off-Campus Access for all WSU-Affiliated users (except for Medical Campus faculty and students) - In order to access licensed databases and journals available through the Library Catalog using your Web browser, you must first confirm you are a WSU affiliate (either a student, faculty, staff or a WSU retiree). If you are off the WSU campus and are having trouble accessing library databases or online journals, please see the information below.
You can show your affiliation in one of three ways:
- If you use a networked computer on campus (for example, from your office or your campus residence) you automatically show your campus affiliation and no further configuration is needed.
WayneConnect: no longer available
- If you connect to the Internet using a private ISP (Internet service
provider) such as AOL or @Home, you need to have the means to identify
yourself as a part of the Wayne State community. The WSU proxy server along
with your WSU AccessID provide that means. You can find directions for
setting up your Web browser to use a proxy server at http://computing.wayne.edu/proxyserver/index.php.
If you have any questions regarding dial-up services to the University
network or proxy services, please contact the C&IT Help Desk at (313)
577-4778 or e-mail them at helpdesk@wayne.edu.
Alternatively, if you are a staff or faculty member of the WSU Library System, you can call the CST Help Desk at 7-1154.
To access the University Libraries' licensed resources (e.g., electronic journals) from off-campus you must have an AccessID. Even when you use the School of Medicine's e-mail as your electronic mail account, the AccessID is necessary to access OVID MEDLINE, the electronic journals and the array of important health sciences information resources.
WSU Residents can get assistance from the WSU/DMC Graduate Medical Education Program Office to get their AccessID.
As a courtesy for the School of Medicine, College of Pharmacy/Allied Health Professions and WSU Residents, the Shiffman Library's Reference Desk staff can assist in finding AccessIDs or resetting passwords. You will need to come to the desk in person with valid identification. Only C&IT distributes the AccessIDs initially.
Access via cable modem or when using an Internet Service Provider (ISP), is possible through the WSU proxy server. For assistance, follow the set-up instructions from C&IT, call them at 313-577-4778 or e-mail them at helpdesk@wayne.edu It is necessary to have the WSU AccessID when using another ISP or cable modem.
The Shiffman Library staff is pleased to answer questions you may have about access to specific databases, journals or other health sciences information resources. Please contact our Reference Desk 313-577-1094 or e-mail us at askmed@wayne.edu
